2022 Masters Day 2

Posted on April 9, 2022 alt_text

Friday at The Masters

Augusta National got hit by winds and specifically a Westerly wind which brought new perils for the players to overcome. Suddenly the narrow chute on 18 became unplayable.
The winds were forecast and they came gusting in, hurting scores from start to finish.

A topsy turvy Day 2 ended with no real advantage between early and late starters, however a clear leader has emerged. The man in form that is untouched, the world number 1, Scottie leads by 5 with a record-tying lead!

Masters22Day2 Scottie Lead

The morning field really struggled with a 69 by the former champ Charl the best of the early bunch. He had to rely on a near ace on 16 to get him there.

Charl’s form headed into The Masters was woeful. 6 MCs in a row and dead last in SG Tee to Green. However, his 69 got him into the clubhouse and soon had the clubhouse lead, whilst everyone came back to him, like Sungjae.

The afternoon started tough and then finally got better as the Big Boys entered the back 9.

Scottie had not won on the PGA Tour 45 days ago - no he stands on the edge of greatness after 3 wins in 5 and on the verge of a first Major. Practically unheard, even Tiger-esque.

On his bag, he also has a winning veteran in Ted Scott who won The Masters twice with Bubba. He knows every blade of grass on the hallowed turf and Augusta loves experience!

A nice tidy queue of major champs awaits Moving Day with the main picks being: Lowry, Hideki,DJ and Collin. All are hovering, all are ready to pounce.

Masters22Day2 Scenes

Its even money between the field and Scottie and probably fair to say the potential winners list is limited to those under par at this point, but thats a major stretch.

Round of the Day
Hard to beat a 67 any day, let alone in the Westerly crosswinds and Scottie and JT were brilliant. There were 4 other scores in the 60s and each one had their own story.
Charl has been horrific this year. Fact.
Lowry is the Open champ that everyone loves and as an Irishman suits the Green of Augusta. He called Friday, his “best ever round”.
Hideki nearly withdrew this week as he seeks to defend.
Swafford plays with PXG! and finished the 13th 1 club light after the infamous irons snapped whilst playing his 2nd shot over Rae’s Creek!

JT’s 67 sits top of the pile, with him facing a probable MC after his opening 76. He only had the 1 bogey and finished with 3 birdies on 14 to 16 to make the cut and present a man in form eager for his 2nd major after an extended drought.

Shot of the Day
Some fine play on a difficult day and some of the best shots won’t get recognition - purely as a result of these crazy efforts by Bubba and Cink. Serious mention: Lowry’s chip on 10 was close to impossible and that birdie 3 vaulted him into contention and could be massive come Sunday.

ACE alert for Cink, but still an MC!

Birdie for Bubba when 6 looked like likely got him into the weekend.

Performance of the Day
Tiger making the cut after his Friday start was sensational. We can add the other turmoil to this story, but just look at the names he left behind in a significant vindication of his greatness despite his physical predicaments and lack of play since 2020.

The Movers
It's Moving Day up ahead and if the weather keeps up, we are in for carnage. A cold weekend awaits. Added to this, the slick greens, narrow chutes and crosswinds, make it close to impossible. With the cut at +4, there are only 7 shots separating last and 2nd. But the leader sits atop at -8! Can Scottie be caught? The rest of the field is unlikely to run away with it.

Swafford lost a clubhead on his way to a 69 and could be in for a sneaky, unnoticed charge. Si Woo had it going yesterday and fires at every pin, so another who might be worth the risk.

If the greens get quick, then Fitzy or CBez might be the dark horses to keep an eye on.

Taking the weekend off
With the Cutline falling at +4, the hopefuls ate +5 included Burns, Jordan, BK and Xander who were all well fancied and in decent fettle. Between BK and Jordan, the numerous missed putts inside 2 feet. How the mighty have fallen! (lets not forget the disaster on 12 again, CONTENT too graphic to be shared).

Reminder of the Stats:
Bucket 1: Cambo 25%, JT 23%, Rahmbo 13% & DJ 8%. (3 are under par)
Bucket 2: BK 25%, King Louis 17%, Jordan 12% & Zala 6% (1 of these is under par and the rest are not around for the weekend)
Bucket 3: Tommy 14%, Leish 11%, Rose 9%, Tiger 9% & Henley 9%. (none of these are under par, at least 3 of them made the cut)

Who do you fancy for your SUB PICKS?

The leaderboard is tight - more than enough room for a charge up the board.

Team Scrotum was hovering in contention through day 1 and then made a late surge to lead by 1, buoyed by Scottie and saved by a MC who took his wild card.
Bradthig7 lies only 1 back and will be willing JT to continue his charge into the weekend, plus the fact that there were no MCs in the stable.

Sitting within striking distance Fitzmagic and TT’s Big Hitters who have made a remarkable recovery from day 1, showing where there is a will, there is a way, and of course there is a Lowry chip in on no 10 to assist too!

The bottomboard (some already have SUBS) is littered with train wrecks with 7 teams 20 OVER or more!!

Hello Friends was probably poking the bear a little too much for Jim Nantz’s liking.
Win Big or go home! lived true to the team name and went left, right and finally home.
AHK had 4 MCs, simply running out of wildcard options and lots more misery ahead.
The Patron’s Punts has taken medicine already and while Bushveld Bandits are still living in denial with zero subs so far.

Augusta National is going to be playing tough this weekend, the weather forecast is cold and then frost predicted for Sunday. This should make the course firmer bringing in many other types of players as opposed to the bombers only.

36 holes to go and the action should be aplenty! Sit back and enjoy.

Moving Day is upon us, SUBS are needed. You don’t want to miss that deadline, which is 10 mins before the first tee time on Saturday - wherever you may be across the globe.
