2022 Open Championship at St Andrews

Friday at The Open

Friday started with overcast conditions, a breeze off the bay, rain and St Andrews was showing its teeth. However, this was not going to last and as the rain cleared, the wind died and again the players were able to feast.

The morning starters had a tough Thursday so when the course eased up on Friday, their joy was cleared noted. Players like Hatton, Jordan, Rahmbo, Fitzy & Cantplay got their teeth into it and came from behind the eight-ball to post solid scores under par - keeping their hopes of a charge over the weekend alive. Do you want them as part of your SUB PICKS?

Closer to the top, there are a stack of chasers - who will keep the leaders sharp. DJ has had moments at St Andrews before - having the 36 hole lead in 2015 before falling off the wagon dramatically. The quiet world no 1, Scottie is also flying under the radar but right in the running for The Open.

Overnight leader Cam Young did not enjoy the same joys, but still hung in to post a score that has him 2 shots behind - right in the mix. He never looked shaken despite the change in fortune and will be a tough competitor all weekend.

The other Cambo was electric all day and could have easily stretched his lead even further after he made eagle on 14. His putter was its usual red-hot and his swing showed great poise, as he once again got in the mix and lead at a major.

The crowd will be pulling hard for Rory to sneak up on the lead. In typical fashion on Friday, Rory would make an unlikely birdie on 17 followed by a disappointing par on the last. Will he be able to keep up with a charging leader?

Each of the last 7 Open winners at St Andrews were T4 or better after 2 rounds. That means we have 1 of 4 winners as we head into the weekend. Who are you picking?

Round of the Day
Bogey free rounds were becoming the norm until players reached the holes 15 to 17 when suddenly a leak was sprung.

Hatton, Scotty & Cambo managed to keep it going with the trio having no bogeys and enjoying rounds of 66, 65 and 64 respectively. Scotty got himself back into the mix after a slow start on Thursday.

Cambo showed his stripes once again, with an ice cool demeanour to match that silky putting stroke. His round took him into a 2 shot lead heading into the weekend of The Open.

Shot of the Day
There were eagles aplenty on Friday and a near ace by Rahmbo on a par 4, but a stunning eagle by Viktor down the closing stretch, thrust himself into the mix just when he needed it.

Performance of the Day
Its hard to ignore the leader’s 64, but considering where Scotty was in terms of the cutline headed into Friday, his 65, under immense pressure, stands above the rest.

The Movers
It's Moving Day up ahead and although the wind is not expected to blow fiercely, its expected to be breezier at 3pm when the leaders go off. An early starter could easily make a move when the course is less protected.
Open22Day2 Weather

Anyone at 2 or 3 under, will be thinking a pair of 64s could be enough to the Champion Golfer of the Year?

Sergio, Burns, Fleetwood & Pieters could be candidates for another low round on Saturday after finding some form on Friday.

Taking the weekend off
The Cutline fell at Even par, with a few big names on the outside like defending champ Collin and other fancied players like Homa, Louis, BK & Leish.

Some of the former champs also miss out on some weekend action including Tiger, who received a warm send off. Others out include Iceman, Big Easy, Lefty and Padraig amongst others.
