2024 PGA Champs: Day 1

Posted on May 17, 2024 alt_text

Thursday at The PGA Champs

See all the majorpunter scores.

The conditions at Valhalla were soft and benign for a morning charge. Birdies and Eagles galore, across the field, led by the charging X who has been red hot all year without the well published lack of W’s. It was a sensational 62 and so nearly a major record 61, but did open a 3 shot lead.

There were 3 other chasers sitting on 6 under par including The Phenom with a welcome return to form. Then 3 of the big names, Rory, Scottie and BK managed to lock in solid under par scores and sit 4 and 5 back.

The weather looked iffy all day with the threat of rain always around. tI will be interesting to see if the course stays as soft and gettable.

Shot of the Day
Its like he had not even left when he charged out the gates with a eagle hole-out! Scottie just signalled to the rest that he was back!

Round of the Day
No other contenders, a 3 shot lead and a near 61! What a performance by X!

Performance of the Day
Its hard to look past X but the sake of spreading the love, we will. The Phenom has been struggling of late so a charging 65 from him and less known Hubbard was superb.

Top Bucket:
The Big 3 dominated picks and delivered. Its going to be a super shootout. Some confident money on X though he seemed to be hurt badly by Quail Hollow. As he found his rhythm he quickly forgot those demons and charged! What a round.

2nd Bucket:
Max was the fan’s favourite here, especially post his Masters efforts. There is always a feelgood factor when backing him. Those stuck with Tommy will be a little grumpy heading into Friday and hoping for a fast turnaround.

Jordan & Tommy are both still on the course, delivering very contrasting days, with Tommy looking in fine fettle to contend again in a major at 2 under par.

3rd Bucket:
Picks here were evenly spread, Cambo & OtherCam leading the scoring rights in these early days, but there is still much golf left.

Bottom Bucket:
BK dominated the picks as expected and delivered a solid effort. It will serve as a base for his defence. Lots more to come. Punters were well rewarded with The Phenom pick who looked solid and ready for a renewed run at major success.

Day 1 is all about keeping yourself in it and not getting too excited in the chase for your first major. There were some good scores for the punters and plenty of scores under par on the LEADERBOARD.

Gunslingers sits firmly atop of the leaderboard at 22 under with 7 teams chasing the big start!

All tied on 18 under, its a proper log jam and another heap on 16 and 17 under.

It’s a very tight leaderboard so anything can happen on Friday, especially with a stack of holes still to play.

The bottomboard is pretty clean, with no one over par, worst being EVEN and a lonely last spot at that.

PokeyAU2 sits a whopping 5 shots being WRP2. All that can be said is that its a long way to go!

It’s a long road to go and with changing weather in the mix, there is still a lot of unknown. With major champions in your team, we know they can flip the switch and turn it around.

Looking forward to a Friday with so much in anticipation.
