2025 PGA Championship: Its Prep Time

Posted on May 12, 2025 alt_text

The PGA Championship returns to Quail Hollow after last hosting a PGA in 2017 when JT triumphed.

No time for a long preview mail? Just head over to get your PICKS in!

With players having warmed up at a Signature Event at Philadelphia Cricket Club, where the course is short, greens are small and its so different from the normal courses on tour. No matter what form it creates, not sure the worth when they get to the eagerly anticipated 2nd major of the year, the PGA Championship.

Quail Hollow will be roaring, hordes of fans will be flooding in, so it should be a cracker!

Reminder of the majorpunter rules, with a no-subs option, but having 6 picks including 2 wildcards. See the RULES on the site, which also include a no-sympathy approach to players withdrawing once the first tee shot has gone off.

The Headliners
Scottie, Rory & The Bulk are dominating pundits expectations, and either of the 3 could lay claim to being a favourite. It would be epic to see a shootout again amongst any of these 3.

There is a band of youngsters chasing a 1st major or a 2nd and 3rd, with so much talent in the mix! Many have picked up wins already in 2025, and ready to win again!

The Hov, JT, aberg!, Min Woo, Straka, Hideki, TKim, & Jaco - just awesome talent to pick from. There are a few veterans, who are not close to this form, who will be having serious doubts that they can make the grade. Such is the game, that is played mainly between the ears.

The Defending Champ
X managed to get his 1st major at Valhalla before getting a 2nd major at Troon. Has struggled in 2025 with fitness issues, but seems to be on the mend and enjoyed a top 10 at Augusta to show he is back. Hard to see X defending and trumping the others, just based on form and readiness. He has a stellar history at Quail Hollow, which can’t be ignored.

The Field
The PGA Championship FIELD is arguably the strongest in the majors based on DATA GOLF RANKINGS and this year is no different.

To level it out, there are a scattering of defending champions, who might not fancy their chances like Micheel, Kaymer or Dufner plus those 20 club pro’s, who are pro but not so much of a pro as the rest, led by Tyler Collet and don’t forget about Blockie from years gone by!

Late invites went to Rickie & DJ who both seem like forgotten men for different reasons.

The Course and Surrounds
Quail Hollow has undergone some changes since 2017, aimed at making it a better major venue for players and fans.
To the course, alterations to the greens, bunkers, tees and a general layout. Of course, the 16th is the start of the dreaded green mile which will test the extremities of every player. But the course remains a hookers paradise, hence why specific players have done consistently well at Quail.

The changes were also aimed at allowing more stands to be in place, including bigger hospitality facilities. Its a traditional PGA Tour course, which players have seen many times over the years. It remains to be seen if the course can be tricked up enough to allow some creativity or an option of 2nd guessing themselves.

Potential Favourites:
Rory
The fans # 1, coming off the most significant moment in golf for the past 20 years, who is in the form of his life, plus lets not forget his record at this course, with his draw bias. 3 wins already in 2025 and ready to add more majors to his current 5.

Scottie
He is no 1 on any ranking though running off his 2024 efforts still, with a lone win in 2025 in a lesser field. He did top 5 at Augusta where he is a perennial contender, lets see if he can win a different major.

The Bulk
Came close in 2024 at Valhalla, with a major later in the year at Pinehurst. Contended again at Augusta, blamed his irons for being off before winning on LIV soon after. His game might suit the Quail laayout as much as Rory.

The Others:
The list of possible first timers on the major list is long and impossible to ignore these guys - they have won already this year, an important ingredient in the build up.
ABerg: A win this year, contended at Augusta, was so close.
Russell: Always there and thereabouts, without contending. The best putter in the game, can he manage to compete with the power hitters?
Straka: Coming through the ranks of college golf, he is a ball striking machine who will contend at majors soon, showing his metal with a win this past week as well as earlier in 2025.
