Oakmont with its tweaks and adjustments is ready to host a US Open with fans and players in mind. In truth, this course is always ready, but is certainly better than its 2016 iteration. The crowds will be flocking in and expecting the usual major atmosphere which will peak come Sunday.
No time for a long preview mail? Just head over to get your PICKS in!
Keep an eye open for the majorpunter changes introduced last year, with a no-subs option, adding a 6th pick and the addition of another wildcard. See the updated RULES on the site, which also include a no-sympathy approach to players withdrawing once the first tee shot has gone off.
The course is expected to be heavy, with lots of rain throughout the season. To add a bit of meat, the rough will also be especially juicy, growing to 5 inches across the board with no gradual rough as previously tried. This is going to be a beast!
The Bulk is defending this week, which will be a tough feat based on history. However, his form is looking superb. Driving will be key for him and if that purrs then other weaknesses are mitigated.
Stat Attack
This is a special venue littered with ball strikers as winners. The list is exceptional as the course is a US Open hotbed where every club in your bag is tested.
Length is key, it always is, but in 2016, Furyk came 2nd, despite only averaging 275 off the tee. DJ was immaculate that week off the tee, ranking high in distance and top 20 in accuracy, and his score showed that.
A few other considerations:
1. Rory has 6 straight top 10s at US Opens, none being a W. The record is 7 straight (Hogan).
2. X has got 8 straight top 15 finishes at US Opens
3. Scrambling is going to be key this week, but with the greens and challenges so unique you can’t use the PGA Tour stats
Then the big discussion of Lefty to complete the Grand Slam, surely a forgotten man, now long into the over 50 category, though he keeps producing moments of magic without doing a whole round of that!
majorpunter Favorites
Any major presents so many potentials, obviously littered with favourites of proven top end players, but we all know there can be a surprise out there though none appeared in 2024.
The course is expected to favour ball strikers, as opposed to longer hitters only. Any errors will be amplified regardless of the club. There are opportunities for birdies and doubles aplenty - on both sides.
The Big Boys: are on everyone’s lips. Rory, Scottie, X, Rahmbo and The Bulk are all on the march, all recent major winners and they feel they can win at any time. Its great to see this group of gladiators growing. But there are others in with a chance.
Collin: such an incredible iron player, this course will place great pressure on all those clubs and not many can stick with him in that respect. Decent form in majors but no wins in 3 years! That might be an indictment of his distance and the courses he plays as opposed to his own form.
Aberg: This is a punt based on his recent PGA form, but the man has the tools for majors and definitely for a beast like Oakmont so lets him show that again.
The Challengers
The DATA GOLF RANKINGS have a few surprises, but Scottie does keep ranking at the top of all.
The top 10 is littered with top, high performing talent: Scottie, Rory, Collin, Rahmbo, JT, X & BDC are all multiple major winners. Thats 7 of them! Thats a ton of pedigree and form to boot.
But what of the rest who are not on everyone’s radar?
Foxy: 2 wins in 2025, including last week. Great iron player, great driver. Can’t deny the man is in form and in the groove!
Shane: Superb form in 2024 and recently in 2025, SG approach is a stat on his side and this will be imperative this week. Putting is not his strength, but is sneaky good on Poa greens as an anomaly.

Oakmont will create an epic major. The course presents so many opportunities for birdie, rare for the US Open , but also will break you in an instant.
Beyond Scottie, there are some stars who are stepping up at the US Open with serious history and credentials behind them. Rory has a cracking recent record at this major, The Bulk has 2 wins but little else, Rahmbo is back, but also has some serious creds to back himself up including that win in 2021.
Your Picks
The DATA GOLF RANKINGS are an interesting mix and determine our mixed pots for PICKS.
The Top bucket: Its always a tough pick, with so much proven match winners. Bet against Scottie at your peril. He definitely is back to his best. But what about Jaco who won again this past week on LIV?
The 2nd bucket: Aberg has slid to 20th on the list, but he might be operating in stealth mode? Hatton has enjoyed a good major run of late - despite a lack of consistency on LIV, though is yet to truly compete in majors.
The 3rd Bucket: Here comes a stash of players who have never quite made it into the big leagues. Ignore Jordan & JDay for a sec and you are staring at a mix of passionate players looking for their 1st major. A course demanding accuracy off the tee, maybe its time for the Koreans to step up.
The Bottom Bucket: The other Cam seems to have found some form, entered via the qualifiers and came close in Canada, just fluffed a chip when the pressure told on 18. He is still trending nicely. Another player nearly forgotten, but now headed the right way is Leish who also qualified for the major.
