Thursday at The Masters
A wet and balmy day meant that round 1 will end on day 2. Thunderstorms, dark clouds and heavy rains dominated the morning wave of this November Masters. This meant that the morning field were spared some of the expected bad weather and instead enjoyed a morning inside with their feet up.
When they returned, birdies (and eagles) were the name of the game. The course was defenceless with greens receptive and lacking that usual sting on the stimpmeter - putts were rolling in from everywhere and the scores showed it.
The foot was pressed firmly on the pedal and many players made moves. Tiger tied his best ever first round at Augusta (and first major bogey free for many a year), Webb had murmurings and delivered a solid 67 while Xander tied him on that number after a very hot start. There were other 68s posted from the “morning” field - and The Bulk’s predicted par 69 did seem like par - except that he shot a topsy turvy 70.
Casey had been prepping for this Masters with a deep focus and duly delivered a leading day 1 score of 65. However, his shirt of choice was something less than fancy. His play though was stellar despite the 80s relic, peppered with birdies and an eagle on 2.
If you were not under par, you were falling behind, so players like BK, Jordan, Todd, Fitzy, Lowry and Bubba will be spitting mad - although some of them can redeem themselves on their respective back 9’s in round 1. Those at Even will be giving themselves a pep talk too - this includes Rors.
Punter Picks
With scoring so good and also incomplete, its a challenge to see exactly who has had a mare so far - however there are some standouts.
Bucket 1: BK, Rors, Morikawa all rued the continued errors that plagued their games - whilst the early favourites showed why they are numbers 1 to 3 in the world. Rahmbo started poorly in fact - but then was aided by a string of birdies and an eagle. So there is hope for those left on the course.
Bucket 2: the more popular picks all delivered soundly for the punters with a few scores in the 60s. The Phenom, Louis, Casey - they all just love Augusta and it shows.
Bucket 3: saw some solid picks by punters with good showings so far for JDay and Westy (both under par and in the clubhouse). At the end of day, Rickie also found himself a few under, tied with the ever present Bernhard Langer, looking striking in red, a look he made famous in 1985.
The standouts that dominated our minds and hearts:
Bucket 1: Rahmbo 23%, DJ 17%, Bulk and JT 13% each, Brooks 10%.
Bucket 2: Human Phenom 19%, King Louis 18%, Hideki 17%, Rosie 9%.
Bucket 3: JDay 20%, Bubba 18%, Rickie 14%, Westy & Cam Smith 6%.
