Day 1 at the 2025 US Open

Posted on June 13, 2025 alt_text

Thursday at The US Open

The conditions at Oakmont were challenging to say the least, scoring was very hard and only 10 players were able to go under par.

JJ Spaun hits out from the church pews

JJ Spaun set the early pace with a remarkable bogey free 66, when others struggled. Thrissie briefly had the lead at 5 under before a nasty double cost him. It was a nice return to form nonetheless.

Serious effort from BK to go under par, who has been written off by most pundits.
There is a stash of players at Even par, the magic number at US Opens.

Shot of the Day
It was a tough day yesterday for the majority of players, but how was this pair of tee shots on the challenging par 3 13th by Kirk & Hughes who otherwise had days to forget?

Award has to go to Reed for his albatross from 286 out on the par 5 fourth hole!

Round of the Day
JJ Spaun to lead with a bogey free round, as Oakmont, of all places just sensational golf.

Performance of the Day
US Open debutant and qualifier James Nicholas shot a 69, lighting up his own expectations and his small group of followers.

majorpunter Picks

Top Bucket:
The Big Boys dominated the picks as predicted, though there is huge support for Scottie over the rest. In the end, Rahmbo showed his stuff and gave a display which re-affirms his status.

Rohm from a tricky like at the 2025 US Open

2nd Bucket:
Aberg is not a million miles from finding something, just not sure what that something is. Its still better than the much-fancied Lowry who had a day to forget.

3rd Bucket:
Si-Woo provided plenty of light for punters who backed after his efforts at The PGA Champs, whilst Jordan is in a good space too.

Bottom Bucket:
JRose lured us in and then came back with a typical performance of a likely MC, but then again Thrissie has hardly made a cut on the PGA Tour this year and the kid was flying yesterday.

Thriston Lawrence is one shot behind leader

Day 1 is all about keeping yourself in it and not getting too excited in the chase for your first major. It was a hard day for scoring for pro’s and punters alike, as per the LEADERBOARD.

The Souch Bags is leading in the early stages but with plenty of time to go. Only 1 shot back is Tomoose & his Guns. Its a long journey ahead with plenty of chasers and only 6 punters under par so far.

It’s a long road to go and with changing weather in the mix, there is still a lot of unknown. With major champions in your team, we know they can flip the switch and turn it around.
