Winged Foot has got teeth and grew those quickly on day 2. The course was again looking superb, but with a few extras pins tucked away and high winds that gusted throughout the day, this course left the field in ruins.
Players were missing fairways and greens with regularity - and often with no reason, iron off the tee or a wedge into a green and they collapse - the pressure is intense and just like us weekend hacks, they throttle the club and flip it over. Then it gets spicy - missing greens equals juicy rough and the players just have no idea how to manage it.
The result: 11 scores of over 80 from the world’s best and only 3 scores in the 60s. The Incredible Bulk, Bubba and Hideki were the only to post under par scores, although it was all far from a simple 68 or 69. The Bulk had to make eagle on his last hole to sign for a 68, while Hideki relied on this creative chip in.
The list of big names missing the cut in the carnage resembled an old fax paper roll, it kept going and going. Major champions GMac, Sergio, Jordan, Phil, Tiger, Rosie, Kaymer, Willett, Walker, Keegs, Gary W, Collin and the Iceman were all left at the gate waiting for the bus.
Plus in-form names like: Fitzy, Tommy, Si Woo and Hatton - they all will have no role in this drama over the weekend.
The Leaders
Fatty Feed had a wand in his wand around the greens, either chipping or putting, and will be leaning on his short game throughout the weekend. His game also consisted of a incredible volume of knockdown earns, cut drives as he mixed it up.
He looked very focussed as he made a closing sand save birdie and solo 36 hole lead.
And before you throw all your money on the man, just remember this moment from Pebble last year:
The Bulk posted his first ever consecutive sub par scores in a major and with that earned a final day spot in the last pairing for Moving Day. He also closed strong with a Driver, 9-iron Eagle.
There are 16 players within 5 of the lead and on Moving Day will all feel confident about marching up the leaderboard. Xander is amongst those as well as King Louis who passed Jack for the most scores of 67 or better at a US Open. Rafa is also in the grouping and has played solid throughout.
Its going to be a similar day to day 2 so anything under par will be gold. Who do you fancy for your SUB PICKS, of which I suspect there will be many.
The players making the cut are split by 10 shots and the early starters will be hopeful of a chance at redemption. On the number cut-liners like JDay, Bez, Rickie and Lowry could all get amongst it early. Otherwise top players mid table like Rahmbo or DJ might be tasty options.
