What started out with great expectations of a repeat of the excitement of the PGA Championship, turned into a damp squid as the Incredible Bulk destroyed the field with a memorable final round of 67 and a winning total of 274, 6 under par.
Every single other player struggled on the Final Day - no one else posted under par, let alone a 67, and there were a few 82s tied for worst of the day. It was very hard out there and in the end, a worthy new winner by 6 shots was crowned, who left his closest challengers in first gear, while he powered ahead.
The win was the result of incredible hard work and perseverance, which continued late into Saturday night. The Bulk is one of the hardest workers on Tour and last night left the range late - way past sunset as he worked on his game with determination rarely seen.
Wolffie did his best to compete and stuck with him through the front despite some bogeys - trading eagles on 9 in classic matchplay style. Often these titles are decided on the toss of a coin - and it was oh so close for Wolffie on 10 when a tee shot slightly offline, drifted into the sand and he ended up taking bogey. After this, it slipped away for the youngster who is sure to have many more opportunities to win a Major.
The Bulk did stretch patience levels to the nth degree with his slow play - which no doubt affected Wolffie, who is always known for faster play. Same thing affected Feed on Moving Day. Take nothing away from the Scientist. His play was stellar, 3 scores in the 60s at Winged Foot deserves serious praise indeed. He ended up only hitting 23 fairways all week and once again, there will be much talk about the golf ball and the width of the fairways. However, everyone else could not get under par, so the set up stacked up all in all.
The top 10 was filled with top ranked players across the board - but with good value for punters with King Louis, Harris, Zach J and especially Will Zalatoris (remember that name) performing well above their ranking.
It was another top 5 for Xander at a US Open - that's 4 in a row from 4 tries at the US Open. He will be disappointed with his back 9 finish - making bogey after bogey until he closed with a birdie 3. King Louis also closed with a birdie, but was also left frustrated by his lack of delivery on a Final Day which needed the challengers to post early numbers and create pressure. It was not to be.
