A win that golf loves, Fitzy repeats at Brookline with Billy on the bag and emulates Jack for the US Amateur/US Open Double.
The major had it all. Overnight rain left Brookline a little soft for the final day - making the course just a little more playable than normally expected and definitely better scoring than Moving Day.
Brookline is walking way from the US Open with its credits fully enhanced and respected. The course has played brilliantly and served up an outstanding major. The crowds were raucous and respectful - adding to an incredible spectacle.
Scottie’s flying start blew the field wide open - with 4 birdies in his opening 6 holes. 6 under was his ultimate peak
Scottie’s early burst forced a 3 horse-race quite soon, except that Zala was nearly buried after being 3 shots back early on, after 2 early bogeys. He dug in and came back to lead by 2 walking to the 12th tee, after some outstanding play. He could not maintain this charge, with missed opportunities down the stretch - tough putts that are needed to win majors (despite his superb birdie on 16).
The 3 challengers duelled all day, landing punches throughout. In the end Fitzy stood firm, built off his supreme approach play, as he had 17 GIR. He had a few 3-jacks, which were surprising, but he gathered some feetage with key putts on 13 and 15 to open a 2 shot lead.
The ball-striking masterpiece by Fitzy with his 17 GIRs tied Sir Nick (‘96 Masters) and BK (‘17 US Open). - ranking it one of the best striking rounds of all time as it led him to his 1st major win.
This was also Billy Foster’s 1st major win , but after 40 years of toil (being a looper for Seve, Clarkie, Tiger, Bjorn & Westie and he struggled to contain himself at the closure. What an awesome reaction!
Rory got everyone out of their seats with a birdie on the opening hole, before exchanging a mix of scores and ultimately fell out of contention by the back 9. He did make a comeback as the round came to an end. Thats another top 5 in majors, but not what he was after. Will his major drought end in July?
This major top 10 is Rory’s 4th in a row and the first time he has 3 in the first 3 majors of the year.
Round of the Day:
Players enjoyed a chance to make some birdies after the pain from days 1 to 3. There were a few 66s posted by Collin & Migliozzi before Hideki charged in with a bogey free 65 and posted a clubhouse lead of 3 under, which stood for a long time.
Shot of the Day:
The pressure of the lead, chasing a major, Fitzy probably reeled off 4 shots of the day, with his drive on 5, that 50ft putt on 13, the iron into 15 from the gallery and the fairway bunker approach on 18. Pick any one of those! Each of them gave him the slender 1 shot margin that he needed.
The Leaders:
The Chasers:
The top 10s managed to lock their tickets into next year’s US Open at the Los Angeles Country Club, which includes Dahmen who snuck in at T10 at Even par on this treacherous layout.
Denny McCarthy climbed the leaderboard all week from his opening round of 73. He made the cut on the number and in the end posted a best ever T7 in the majors.
Hadwin was the alternate who only snuck in this week, posted his best finish in a major, also posted a T7. Both of them will be looking forward to a few more majors in the near future.

Final Day Sunday was filled with so many storylines and reviewing the teams, it’s clear there were numerous angles for punters in trying to get their players home.
The victor though was WRPHILLIPS21 (2) who leant on Rory to finish strong which proved the difference over Team Buddy for a 2 shot win.
A further 2 shots back was RAHM-COM and PokeyAU3 with both of them having very different days.
PokeyAU3 had the stability of Hideki to lean on with his 65 - which thrust him into the top 3 from outside the mix.

You win some, you lose more. That’s what it takes to be the best. We’ll go again next month!
We are looking forward to the next major, the 150th Open Championship at St Andrews, the obviously famous site of Tiger’s wins in 2000 and 2005 and most recently Zach J in 2015.
